History- Originally planned as a home site for the military personel serving at Fort Hood, Texas, Harker Heights, TX is a community of beautiful homes and active families.

The local lore of early settlers in the area is reflected in the Native North American names given to the streets and prominent features of the City of Harker heights, TX. As the western United states expanded, both Native Americans and early European settlers roamed the area. many legends arise from the arrowheads and ancient trees located in Harker Heights, Texas.

Named for one of the founders of the city the name Harker Heights invokes the hillsides now dotted with executive-style homes. P.R. Cox (co-founder of the city) formed the name Harker Heights from the first and last names of city co-founder, Harley Kern (Kern died before the city was incorporated). Small lots were carved out of the formerly agricultural landscape for use as homesteads for families assigned to the Fort Hood, Texas army post. These first homes were manufactured homes brought by the soldiers.

Water needs and police protection were two of the reasons the area was incorporated as a general law city. With the water services secured, the city of Harker Heights TX developed into a suberban city that recognizes that the needs of families are paramount.

As the interest in larger home sites and more upscale and elegant homes grew, the Harker Heights, TX developers offered larger lots and more upscale housing to meet those needs. Today, the hillsides offer fine living, and the developement of the city from a general law city to its present home rule status is due to the involvement of its citizens.
